In Islamic Republic of Iran, homosexuality is a crime, punishable by flagging or the death penalty. Iranian LGBT experience persecution and discrimination simply because of their sexual orientation. As an intervention, to what is perceived as a "dysfunction," government recommends and sometimes requires sex change operations. As in other criminal acts, non-Muslims face harsher penalties (Article 121).
